The UVIS25 from STMicroelectronics is a digital UV index sensor which provides an accurate measurement of the Ultraviolet radiation index (UVI). Included in the 2.5 mm square package is the UV sensing element and a mixed-signal ASIC to accurately calculate the UVI level and communicate via I2C and SPI interfaces. It can be programmed to generate an interrupt event triggered by a threshold crossing or when a new set of readings have been calculated. The event can be flagged via the dedicated INT_DRDY output pin or by reading an internal register.

Exposure to UV light is known to increase the risk of skin damage and the UV radiation index was formulated by WHO, the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Meteorological Organization to alert people to the dangers. The UVIS25 is the first integrated sensor that could be integrated into a wearable device or smartphone to provide real-time data relating to UV exposure.

Key features of the UVIS25:

  • 0 - 15 UV Index output range
  • Resolution: UVI/16
  • Active and power down modes
