In cooperation with semiconductor device manufacturer NXP, the English firm Wavy Technologies has developed a portable microwave oven with an integrated rechargeable battery. The microwave, dubbed “Wayv Adventurer”, is designed for hikers, trekkers and campers as a convenient way to heat their food and drinks while travelling.

The Wayv Adventurer looks like a large thermos flask, weighs 1.2 kg, and has an inner container with a capacity of 900 ml. Anywhere from 100 to 500 ml of food can be warmed up in the container. The generated microwave power is 200 W, and the integrated exchangeable rechargeable battery has enough capacity for 30 minutes of operation.

The heart of the Wayv Adventurer consists of an RF power stage built around special LDMOS transistors from NXP, which were developed to replace conventional klystrons in microwave communication and radar systems. The device is expected to be available in February 2017 at a price of about US $200.
