The TUDelft has been working on a wireless charging station for electric bicycles that operates from solar energy. The result of this work was presented on Wednesday October 12.

The charging station derives its energy requirements from eight solar panels, which transfer their energy via a DC-net directly to the battery in the bicycle. The charging station offers space for four electric bicycles, en electric scooter and a research bicycle that is charged wirelessly. Any excess energy is supplied to the grid.

The electric research bicycle is fitted with a double stand with a small coil. The bicycle can be parked at the charging station by placing its stand on a magnetic tile. The bicycle is then charged directly via the coil. The bicycle user can follow the charging progress on a built-in screen in the charging station or on their mobile phone. The wireless charging takes no less or more time than the 'conventional' charging of electric bicycles.
