Intel's former CEO and Chairman Andrew S. Grove has passed away at the age of 79.


Born András Gróf in Budapest, Hungary, Grove immigrated to the United States where he studied chemical engineering. After graduation, he was hired by Gordon Moore at Fairchild Semiconductor as a researcher. When Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore founded Intel in 1968, Andy Grove was their first hire. He eventually became the companies President in 1979 and CEO in 1987. He served as Chairman of the Board from 1997 to 2005.

As a result of his work at Intel, along with his books and professional articles, Grove had a considerable influence on the management of modern electronics manufacturing industries worldwide. He has been called the "guy who drove the growth phase" of Silicon Valley. Idolized by Steve Jobs, he was chosen "Man of the Year" in 1997 by Time magazine for being "the person most responsible for the amazing growth in the power and the innovative potential of microchips."
