Scrap the antenna rotor - let the software do the rotation.
This project describes the construction and use of three orthogonal magnetic loop antennas ("Van Veen Antenna") in order to create an electronically adjustable directional sensitivity. The receiver has to provide three phase coupled inputs and is realized using the "RF Bricks" concept described in a recent book ("Build your own software-defined radio") by the author. For the control, the RX has an Arduino, the PC runs a GnuRadio script. In the project repository, you will find all the bits and pieces.
