Intelligent road systems
In spite of periodie oil 'crises ' and fitful bouts of environmental concern, in almost every counrry the dominance of road vehieies over other farms of transport cannot be denied. Traffic congestion in Europe is set to go on rising weil into the next century. In the UK, latest revisions to official forecasts by the Department of Transport, published early in 1989, aeknowledge that the persistent upward trend of car ownership eould double the amount of road traffie within 20 years.
