As in most electronic applications, miniaturization becomes an increasingly important factor for sensor electronics. An integration on a PCB often limits the range of application, when a smaller footprint of the sensor array is required to bring the electronics closer to the actual point of measurement. Additionally, a package for highly specialized sensor applications is expensive and development and manufacturing is hardly affordable even for larger companies.
