A new ceramic material developed by a team of scientists from the University of Twente (the Netherlands) is not only flexible, it is also non-conducting and fireproof, properties considered particularly interesting for printed circuit boards for heavy-duty electronic applications.

The start-up Eurekite has been created to commercialize the new material. Baptized “Flexiramics”, it combines the light weight of a polymer with the thermal and dielectric properties of a ceramic. Flexible ceramic films for electronics use are not new, but, according to Eurekite, only their flexiramics material can be made in thicknesses ranging from a few micrometers up to more than a millimeter. The cost of the new material is low, a sheet of 10 by 10 cm will cost less than one euro.
