ABB and Gravitricity to partner on energy storage using mine shafts and hoist tech Gravitricity’s GraviStore, a gravity energy storage system, combines lithium-ion battery and pumped hydro storage benefits. ABB will accelerate Gravitricity’s technology for commercial adoption. This Partnership offers sustainability opportunities for ABB’s mining customers beyond shaft decommissioning. ABB and Gravitricity have joined forces to leverage hoist expertise and technology for gravity energy storage systems in former mines.

GraviStore, Gravitricity’s system, lifts and lowers weights in shafts, providing long-duration storage (20MWh) and rapid power delivery. Unlike batteries, Gravitricity’s system operates for decades without performance reduction. ABB, a mine hoist market leader, will contribute research, development, and engineering expertise.

The partnership aligns with ABB’s goal to collaborate with value-adding technologies for renewable energy storage. Gravitricity brings grid compliance and control system expertise, conducting feasibility studies for hoisting technology in gravity energy stores. Repurposing mine shafts for energy storage extends their productive life by up to 50 years, mitigating decommissioning costs. ABB’s extensive experience in hoisting solutions ensures low lifecycle cost, reliability, and a single-source supply for mine hoist systems.
