Kyocera has developed an ultra-thin, lightweight speaker design, dubbed Smart Sonic Sound, based on the company’s fine ceramic technology. Just 1 mm thick, the new device uses a piezoelectric actuator combined with a special film to create a piezo film speaker.

The device’s low directivity characteristics broaden the sound projection range and provide 180-degree sound quality. This piezo actuator audio technology is already being used by LG Electronics in their 55-inch curved-screen OLED TV.

Smart Sonic Sound devices are available in three different sizes: 70×110×1.5 mm, 35×65×1.0  mm and 19.6×27.5×0.7 mm, with respective frequency ranges of 200 Hz to 20 kHz, 500 Hz to 20 kHz and 800 Hz to 20 kHz. They weigh 23 g, 7 g and 1 g respectively.
