The domestic mains voltage, even at the best of times, does not have a clean wave form. For all sorts of reason, there are almost always spikes superimposed on the voltage and these adversely affect consumers' equipment. These spikes normally last for between 0.1 µs and 10 µs. Their amplitude varies considerably, but can be as high as 1000 V.
