This month, Stuart Cording started by looking at a recent report from KPMG that reviewed the sentiment of leaders in the semiconductor industry. Overall, the feeling is that an end to the chip shortage is in sight, although a few think issues may continue into 2024.
There was also something new for software testers, with an update to SuperGuard from Solid Sands. With two-hundred additional tests, it is ideal for those maintaining C library implementations.
Diodes announced a new high-side power switch targeting portable solid-state data systems. With three slew-rate settings, the switch offers an RDS(ON) of just 5.1 mΩ. The AP22980 is offered in a WQFN-1520 package and costs around $0.27 (US) in thousand-piece quantities.
Space exploration got exciting again with the launch of the Artemis One mission. The Bochum Observatory received support from Aaronia, who supplied them with a SPECTRAN V6 spectrum analyzer and their RTSA-Suite PRO analysis software. This will help decode the signals received during the mission via their 20 m parabolic antenna.
Finally, NXP introduced their SAF85 automotive radar. Matthias Feulner, Senior Director Marketing for Automotive Radar, explained the role of radar sensors in improving the protection of vulnerable road users (VRU). Thanks to design improvements of this RFCMOS, single-chip device, drivers receive an improved view of objects, such as a cyclist close to a lorry in the road ahead. The SAF85 is currently being used to develop radar sensors for next-generation vehicles.

After their recent visit to CES in Las Vegas, Stuart Cording caught up with Tony Zarola and Matt Prewett. Tony covered advancements in time-of-flight (ToF) camera technology, covering a highly integrated module with a 1 Mpixel sensor. This was combined with the audio section of a home theater system for CES.
