With smartphones becoming the center of many people’s universe, there is a growing need for the ability to connect them to normal monitors for easier viewing, especially among older users. To facilitate this, Analogix Semiconductor offers its SlimPort technology to interface smartphones and tablets to any nearby display.

SlimPort uses the DisplayPort open standard, which has been adopted by many computer makers because there are no royalty fees for the high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI). Although DisplayPort can easily be interfaced to HDMI displays with a simple passive interface cord, SlimPort goes a step further by directly interfacing to the driver chips built into smartphones and tablets that support DisplayPort but multiplex the signals onto the standard micro-USB connector.

SlimPort delivers full HD resolution, 3-D compatibility and support for the emerging ultra-high-resolution 4K standard, and it even works with multiple screens at the same time. However, it is not compatible with iOS (Apple) devices because Apple has its own proprietary connector for wired links.
