Reverse Engineering a Credit Card Featuring Dynamic CVV
A credit card is just a piece of plastic, or is it?
In this video we disassemble a Visa card featuring dynamic CVV2. Such a card does not have the 3-digit CSC (Card Security Code) or CVV (Card Verification Value) printed on it, but instead it displays the code on a small e-paper or e-ink display and refreshes it every hour. This gives pirates less time to use your card if they manage to copy its details including the CVV.
Does this mean that there is a battery inside the credit card? Yes, it does. A very small battery, and much more...
All you need is to immerse the card during 30 minutes in some acetone to dissolve the plastic and uncover the electronics hidden inside. Note that this is a destructive operation, and you won't be able to use your credit card anymore afterwards.
