Jakemy JM-8183 Magnetic Precision Screwdriver Set (145-in-1)
The Jakemy JM-8183 precision screwdriver set packs a lot of tools in a compact hard-case box: 132 screwdriver bits plus holder and additional prying tools for disassembling smartphones and tablet computers. Let's look inside.
Interesting conflicts are unfolding around the fixation technologies used in electronic gadgets—the nuts and bolts that hold everything together. On one side, we have manufacturers who try to prevent users from tampering with the internals of their products while constantly seeking ways to reduce costs. They develop intricate plastic clipping mechanisms and come up with innovative screw head designs that are efficient for manufacturing but deliberately impractical for repair. On the other side, there are users and regulatory bodies striving to combat planned obsolescence and advocating for repairability standards. In between, we find tool manufacturers, who supply the “arms” required by both sides.
The top side holds the opener tools and magnetizer.
Jakemy JM-8183 Toolbox Contents
The Jakemy JM-8183 precision screwdriver set is a weapon aimed at product users interested in disassembling smartphones and other gadgets. It packs a lot of munitions in a hard-case box (185 mm by 120 mm by 50 mm, weighing about 666 grams): 132 screwdriver bits, an extensible magnetic bit holder, a 130 mm flexible extension rod, straight pointy tweezers, five identical plastic opening picks (hidden behind a lid), two identical plastic spudgers, a suction cup and a magnetizer (two small magnets fixed inside the case). If, like Jakemy, you count the case too, you end up with a 145-in-1 toolbox.
More on Bits
The screwdriver bits come in two flavors: chrome-vanadium steel (CR-V, 116 pieces) and S-2 type steel (16 pieces). Except for the long four S-2 bits, all the bits are 28-mm H4 types. The S-2 bits are 45 mm long. Several of the 132 bits come in multiples of two or three, so you can break or lose some. In total, I counted 39 spares. Furthermore, the four long S-2 bits are also included as 28-mm versions, leaving 89 unique types and sizes in total. The Jakemy JM-8183 precision screwdriver kit showing off its contents.
Here is a list of the bits that are included (with quantities):
In the case, the bits are clearly labelled so they are easy to find and put back in the right place. Also, they are easy to remove from the case without requiring superhuman force in your fingertips.
Jakemy JM-8183 has Extendable Holder
With a maximum length of approx. 340 mm even deeply hidden screws can be reached.
The 130 mm bit holder can be extended to 185 mm. Together with the flexible extension rod, a total length of 305 mm is available. With a 45-mm bit inserted, the length is slightly over 340 mm, it is 325 mm with a 28-mm bit. Both the holder and the extension rod have a magnetic head to hold the bits. One of the S-2 bits holds a magnet, allowing you to recover (small) metal parts or bits that fell (deeply) inside the object under repair. The suction cup included in the Jakemy JM-8183 toolbox.
The suction cup is of much better quality than most others I own, it is not simply a repurposed towel hanger. Well, maybe it is a towel hanger, but then it is a good one. It even has a dedicated peel-off release handle lever thingy.
Great Addition for any Workshop or Lab
So, my final verdict is that the Jakemy JM-8183 precision screwdriver set is a rather practical toolkit for anyone wanting to tinker with smartphones, (smart)watches, laptop computers, tablets and similar electronic gadgets. The quality looks pretty good, and it doesn’t take up a lot of space. The Jakemy JM-8183 has a few bits that I didn’t have yet in a similar toolbox, making it a nice addition. And even if it didn’t, you can never have too many screwdriver bits.
