Our June 2014 edition of Elektor Magazine has arrived from the printers, and we’ve got some amazing projects in store for you!

The highflyer of this issue is, without doubt, our Android User Interface Builder. Since a user interface is almost always necessary when controlling or testing a piece of hardware, we’ve decided to make it possible with a smartphone (or tablet!). The FTDI FT311D is a flexible bridge that can interface your circuit to Android devices. It offers seven digital outputs, four PWM outputs, asynchronous serial and I2C and SPI interfaces. We’ve even designed a small board to carry the chip!

In addition to that scintillating project, we’ve also got a handy Seismic Detector for you to build; it’s simple enough and works by using a piezoelectric sensor to generate acoustic and visual alarms when it detects a shock, vibration or earthquake (depending on where in the world you live!).

For those of you with a lathe or milling machine (or a friend who has one), we’ve developed a Lathe Tachometer using an Arduino Micro board and a .96 inch OLED display for instantaneous readouts. This device will keep you informed as to the exact rpm of your lathe or milling machine, be it CNC or vintage.

You can expect the standard Elektor content found in every issue too; the wholly original Hexadoku puzzle, another Retronics article by our very own Editor-in-Chief and Day #11 of our DesignSpark series.

Our June 2014 edition is on sale now in the Elektor Web Store and in selected bookshops and kiosks (subject to transport delays). Elektor GREEN and GOLD members can download their digital copy from the Elektor-Magazine website.
