StuckAtPrototype and Open-Source Hardware

Damian designs open-source hardware and documents the development process on his YouTube channel. His work covers schematic design, PCB layout, firmware, mechanical design, prototyping, manufacturing, and the less glamorous parts of turning an electronics project into something people can actually use. The project history stretches back to an unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign in 2019. Damian later released his design as open-source hardware, attracting a much wider audience, and eventually left his engineering job to pursue the project full-time.

During EEI #63, Damian will talk about that transition and the years of trial and error behind the channel and business. The discussion will cover projects that worked, projects that did not, what he learned from both, and the practical steps involved in moving from a prototype on the bench to a finished product.

From Prototype to Product

AirCube, Damian's flagship air-quality monitor, will provide a practical example. We will look at the engineering and product-development work behind the device, including PCB design, embedded development, sensing, enclosure design, and the decisions involved in preparing hardware for production. The broader discussion will also cover documenting open-source designs, building electronics projects for a YouTube audience, and deciding when a prototype is ready to become a product.

PCB development will naturally form part of the conversation. Readers working on their own boards can also browse Elektor's KiCad coverage for design tutorials, software updates, projects, and previous engineering discussions.

Live Questions and Giveaway

Viewers can put their own questions to Damian during the live session. Topics can range from embedded systems and PCB design to open-source hardware, manufacturing, content creation, and the practical problems that appear between the first prototype and a product that can be shipped.

One viewer will also win KiCad Like A Pro – Fundamentals and Projects (E-book), a 590-page practical guide to schematic capture and PCB design using the open-source KiCad tool.
