Want to know about the results from last week’s System Check on the topic of engineering certificates? Here are the results.

The results suggest that engineers have mixed feelings about certifications. The largest group believes certifications are “somewhat useful,” while a smaller but still significant portion thinks they clearly matter. However, a notable share of respondents are skeptical—saying they are mostly useless, only helpful for HR screening, or less important than real-world experience. Overall, certifications are seen as having some value, but not as a primary indicator of engineering ability.

System Check Results: Week 16

At the same time, many engineers have engaged with certification programs. A majority have paid for at least one course or webinar and received a certificate, with many doing so multiple times. Still, a meaningful portion has never pursued certifications and may not plan to, reinforcing the idea that while certifications are common, they are not universally respected or considered essential.
