PLACITECH Returns to Larger Engineering Projects

When Alessandro joined Elektor for EEI #49 in March 2025, the discussion covered his content-creation journey, viral inventions, and plans to produce longer engineering videos. Since then, he has returned his attention to substantial projects combining electronics, programming, mechanical design, and 3D printing.

In EEI #61, host we will ask Alessandro how PLACITECH has changed and what he learnt from recent projects such as the Retro-Futuristic Console, Beer Pong Turret, and PC Control Panel. Alessandro will also discuss a new project that he expects to release before the interview.

Testing the Parts Before Building the Whole

The finished video usually shows a machine working. This episode will examine the decisions and failures that precede that point. Topics will include validating electronic components before committing to a design, simulating moving parts, checking mechanical clearances, and testing power systems before assembling the final hardware.

The discussion will also consider how electronics and 3D-printed parts affect one another during development. A mechanically convincing design is of little use if it cannot house the circuitry, while a working circuit may still require substantial redesign once motors, controls, displays, and enclosures are added.

Explaining Engineering to New Audiences

Alessandro has presented at the University of Miami, Broward College, and Miami Dade College. He was also invited to appear as a Featured Maker at Maker Faire Miami. He will explain what these experiences taught him about presenting engineering to students, makers, and viewers who may not have a technical background.

The conversation will look at the balance between technical explanation and entertainment, and whether a ridiculous-looking invention can still demonstrate serious engineering principles.

Giveaway: Elektor Arduino MultiCalculator

Three viewers will each win an Elektor Arduino MultiCalculator, valued at €49.95.

This hands-on kit uses an ATmega328-based Arduino Pro Mini module and includes a through-hole PCB, precut acrylic enclosure panels, a 16×2 LCD, 20 buttons, temperature sensors, a programming adapter, and a USB-C cable. Once assembled, it provides 22 functions covering calculations, component values, measurements, conversions, timing, and infrared remote-control decoding.
