The Raspberry Pi Touch Display has grown to 10.1 inches, with the company announcing the larger model this week. Priced at $80, the new Touch Display 2 combines a portrait-native 1200 × 1920 IPS panel with ten-point capacitive touch. It is intended for the Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi Compute Module systems rather than the wider range supported by the smaller displays.

A Larger Raspberry Pi Touch Display

The screen has an active area of 135.4×216.6 mm and overall dimensions of 161.8×247.3×16 mm. It provides 24-bit RGB color, an 85-degree viewing angle, and support for ten simultaneous touch points, compared with five on the 5-inch and 7-inch Touch Display 2 models. Although the panel is portrait-native, Raspberry Pi OS can rotate the desktop for landscape installations.

Only two electrical connections are needed. A 22-way flat-flex cable carries display and touch data over DSI, while a GPIO cable supplies power from the host board. Raspberry Pi includes the cable, GPIO lead, and M2.5 mounting screws. Raspberry Pi OS provides the touchscreen drivers, so a Raspberry Pi 5 should detect the panel without manual calibration after its operating system and bootloader are updated.

Four DSI Lanes Narrow Compatibility

The larger resolution comes with an important limitation. The 10-inch display requires four DSI data lanes, whereas the 5-inch and 7-inch versions use two. Raspberry Pi 4 and earlier full-size boards therefore cannot drive it through their older display connector, and the Raspberry Pi Zero family remains unsupported. Raspberry Pi 5 provides the required four-lane MIPI interfaces.

Compute Module systems can also use the screen through a suitable IO board. On Compute Module 4 and earlier IO boards, however, only the DISP1 connector supports the required four DSI lanes. This is worth checking before treating the new panel as a simple size upgrade for an existing embedded design.

More Room for Practical Interfaces

The 10.1-inch format is better suited to home-automation dashboards, kiosks, robotics interfaces, digital signage, gaming systems, and workshop or laboratory control panels than the smaller models. It remains a component rather than a finished monitor: no enclosure or desktop stand is included, although Jean Luc Aufranc has already produced a 3D-printed VESA adapter!

For makers building a self-contained panel around Raspberry Pi 5, the larger Raspberry Pi Touch Display offers substantially more usable interface space without resorting to HDMI and USB touch connections. Raspberry Pi lists it at $80 and says the Touch Display 2 family will remain in production until at least January 2030.
