Wondering how your peers answered last week’s System Check on the topic of bench instruments and tools? Here are the results. These results highlight a classic reality of electronics development: engineers rely heavily on a few core instruments. The digital multimeter leads the way at 44%, as it is a handy solution for quick diagnostics, voltage checks, continuity testing, and general troubleshooting. The oscilloscope follows at 27%, confirming its importance for signal analysis and debugging. Bench power supplies account for another 20%. More specialized instruments such as logic analyzers and spectrum analyzers are used less frequently.
When asked about the biggest weakness in their workbench setup, respondents pointed overwhelmingly to a lack of bench space (58%). This far exceeds concerns about measurement capability (20%), cable management (11%), automation tools (10%), or ESD protection (2%). Thus, for many engineers, the challenge is not necessarily acquiring more instruments, but finding enough space to use them effectively. As projects become more complex and equipment accumulates, workspace organization and efficient bench design may deliver the greatest productivity gains. What do you think?
