Wondering about the results from last week’s System Check on the topic of version control and Git? Here are the results from last week. The feedback shows that version control has clearly become a mainstream engineering practice, with more than half of respondents using Git for both hardware and firmware development. Another significant group relies on Git specifically for firmware projects, while a smaller percentage still depend on local file versioning or occasional backups. Interestingly, some community members are still unfamiliar with version control altogether, highlighting that while modern development workflows are widespread, there is still room for education and adoption across the electronics community. For today’s multidisciplinary engineers working on embedded systems, PCBs, and firmware together, Git is increasingly viewed not as an optional tool, but as essential.
When it comes to backing up engineering work, Git repositories are again leading the way, serving not only as collaboration tools but also as reliable backup systems. External drives and NAS solutions remain popular. Cloud storage is used by a smaller portion of respondents, likely due to concerns about security, workflow integration, or simply habit. Meanwhile, manual file copies are still surprisingly common, proving that old-school engineering practices continue to coexist with modern workflows in labs around the world.
