Elektor readers are still relying heavily on Wi-Fi in their current designs, with nearly half of respondents identifying it as the wireless protocol they use most often. Zigbee/Thread and LoRa/LoRaWAN form a strong second tier, reflecting continued demand for low-power mesh networking and long-range IoT connectivity. Bluetooth LE remains widely used for short-range applications and wearable or consumer designs, while Cellular IoT technologies such as LTE-M and NB-IoT currently occupy a smaller share of active development work among respondents.

Looking ahead, however, the growth outlook shifts noticeably toward industrial IoT networking technologies. Respondents see Zigbee/Thread and LoRa/LoRaWAN as the fastest-growing wireless solutions, signaling strong momentum for scalable sensor networks, smart infrastructure, and low-power distributed systems. Wi-Fi still maintains a solid growth outlook, especially as newer standards improve performance and efficiency. But engineers seem to expect specialized IoT protocols to drive the next wave of industrial connectivity innovation. Bluetooth LE and Cellular IoT are also expected to expand, though at a more moderate pace compared to mesh and long-range IoT technologies.
