Carbon capture and storage:
A reality check for the Netherlands

The hopes are high that carbon capture and storage (CCS) will become an effective measure to curtail greenhouse gas emissions. Many policy targets rely heavily on the successful implementation of this technology. In order to assess whether these hopes are realistic and under what conditions these could be properly and fully realized, CIEP conducted a study called "Carbon capture and storage: A reality check for the Netherlands". The study shows that CCS has the potential to develop as an important greenhouse gas abatement option, next to other alternatives. The timing of technology's availability and its potential role will still depend, however, on many uncertainties, the most prominent one of which is regulatory uncertainty.
