A multimeter is an essential tool for an electronics hobbyist or professional – everybody has at least one. Most multimeters are stand-alone instruments with a built-in display. In recent years we have started to see wireless multimeters which work together with a smartphone or other device. That can be very handy in a variety of measuring situations. However, most of these wireless multimeters are either very expensive or have only limited features. When I saw the Mooshimeter on the Web and read the specifications, it looked to me like an affordable and full-fledged alternative to a standard multimeter. The price is USD 150, which is about the same as what you would pay for a decent ordinary multimeter.
The Mooshimeter is a fairly small module in a polycarbonate case, which communicates over Bluetooth 4.0 with an Android or iOS smartphone. An app on the smartphone shows the measured values and supports various settings. The module has extensive protection against excessive current and voltage, and it complies with the IEC CAT III standard. The meter can measure voltages up to 600 V and currents up to 10 A. It can also measure resistance, and it has a diode test range. What makes the Mooshimeter special is not only its wireless Bluetooth communication, but also its measurement hardware. That consists of two 24-bit A/D converters, which enable simultaneous two-channel measurements. You can’t do that with an ordinary multimeter.
Among other things, with two-channel capability you can easily measure voltage and current at the same time. There is also a built-in data logger, which can store measurement data from the two input channels on a microSD card for a configurable time interval. Along with readings from the two measurement channels, the app can show trend curves and a sort of oscilloscope display using the measurement data from the memory. All that may sound like a sales pitch, but I just wanted to mention the key features before looking at how it works in practice.
