In the last System Check, we asked community members about quantum computing. Here are the results. The results indicate that community members are both optimistic and curious about quantum computing. Nearly two-thirds of respondents describe themselves as curious about its rise, while roughly 30% are excited. A small minority are skeptical or concerned, suggesting that the engineering community largely views quantum computing as an opportunity worth watching rather than a threat.
That curiosity is matched by a clear desire to understand the technology. Around two-thirds of respondents say they are very interested in understanding how quantum computing technology works, with another third somewhat interested. Virtually no respondents dismiss the topic or say they only want to know about practical applications.
At the same time, respondents seem to be realistic about when quantum computing will affect their daily work. Only a small percentage say it is relevant already, while about a third expect relevance within the next five years. Nearly 45% of respondents believe it is still more than five years away, and around one in five think it may never become relevant to their projects.
Overall, the results point to an audience that is interested in learning about quantum computing today, even if its practical engineering impact is still expected to be some years away.
