Mobile communication has taken the world by storm, with unprecedented acceptance by the general public. A few years ago, a carphone would set you back thousand of pounds. Today, a mobile telephone is offered as a gift if have your photographs developed or new tyres fitted on your car. Yet, there is relatively little technical information on these handy gizmos. This article discusses the basic setup of a cellular telephone network, and how it operates. Special attention is given to today's and tomorrow'S GSM networks.
