The ISL8117 regulator from Intersil is a synchronous step-down PWM controller IC offering a wide input and output voltage range. The PWM controller can work with a 40 ns minimum on-time allowing it to make a direct step-down conversion from 48V input to a 1V point-of-load. An optimal configuration requires ten external components including two power MOSFETs.

Key Features of the ISL8117 regulator:

• Input voltage range 4.5 V to 60 V
• Output voltage range 0.6 V to 54 V
• Light-load efficiency enhancement – Low ripple diode emulation mode with pulse skipping
• Programmable soft start
• Support for prebiased output with SR soft-start
• Programmable frequency: 100 kHz to 2 MHz
• External sync
• Power good indicator
• Forced PWM
• Adaptive shoot-through protection
• Load current sensing via MOSFET rDS(ON)
• Over-current, over-voltage, over-temperature and under-voltage protection

The ISL8117 is available as a 16 lead 4 x 4 mm QFN package or as a 6.4 x 5 mm 16-lead HT SSOP outline. Both outlines feature an EPAD for improved thermal dissipation and noise immunity. It uses internal loop compensation and has single-resistors to define operating frequency and over-current protection. The DEM/Skipping mode used during light-loading lowers standby power consumption and gives consistent values of output ripple with loading.
