System Check! Engineering often requires balancing speed, innovation, reliability, and risk. But where should you draw the line? Give us some feedback on the “move fast and break things” mindset and what it means for real-world engineering.
The results suggest that most respondents from our community expect humanoid robots to become genuinely useful in everyday work relatively soon, but not immediately. About 30% believe this will happen within 5–10 years. Roughly 26% expect it within five years, and another 26% think it will take more than a decade. Only around 8% say humanoid robots are already useful today, with a similar share believing they may never become truly useful. Overall, the audience appears optimistic about humanoid robotics, while recognizing that significant development is still required.
The biggest perceived obstacle is reliable human-robot interaction (41% of respondents). This stands well ahead of AI and real-time decision-making at roughly 29%, suggesting that intelligence alone is not the main concern: robots must also operate safely, predictably, and effectively alongside people. Actuators and mechanics and sensors and perception each attracted about 12%. Battery life and power management ranked lowest at around 6%. The results point to a broader engineering challenge of turning increasingly capable robotic technology into systems that people can reliably work with in real-world environments.
