Technology that works in all conditions

Recently, TME has added new transflective displays from the Display Elektronik brand to their range of optoelectronic components. Today, we invite you to explore this assortment and the technology itself.

Operation and advantages of transflective displays

Transflective displays use a layer called a transflector. It is made of a semi-transparent material that serves a dual function: in low-light conditions, it transmits light from the LED backlight (as in a typical transmissive display). In bright lighting conditions (especially sunlight), the transflector reflects external light, allowing content to be read without turning on the backlight. This adaptability makes transflective screens exceptionally versatile and increasingly popular.

One of the greatest advantages of this technology is excellent readability in full sunlight – traditional transmissive displays either appear dimmed or require a significant amount of energy to optimally illuminate the display surface. This is related to the second advantage: energy savings. In good external lighting conditions, the device can operate without active backlighting, significantly extending battery life, which is crucial in portable devices such as handheld meters, terminals, and other products designed for fieldwork.

Limitations of the technology

Transflective displays also have their limitations. Compared to typical transmissive screens, they may offer slightly less saturated colors and lower brightness in backlight mode. However, for many applications – especially those requiring operation in varying lighting conditions – such a compromise is fully acceptable. Moreover, image quality and viewing angles are significantly better than purely reflective screens, which become completely unreadable in darkness.

Display Elektronik offer

The new series of transflective displays from Display Elektronik offers a wide range of models with screen diagonals from 1.75 inches to 7 inches. From the catalog, you can purchase models with varying key parameters:
  • resolution from 240×320 to 1024×600 pixels;
  • brightness from 120cd/m2 to 1000cd/m2;
  • communication interface – versions adapted to different connection methods are available, such as SPI, 8/16-bit MCU, RGB 24-bit.

Additionally, depending on the model, the displays support 262 thousand or 16.7 million colors. They use popular controllers such as ST7789, ILI9341, or ST7262. With varied dimensions, flexible power options (from 2.4V to 3.6 V DC), and a universal pin layout (e.g., 1x40 or 1x45 pins with a pitch of 0.5 mm or 0.3mm), the panels are easy to integrate with various systems.
