In this new video from Elektor, we bring together two very exciting areas in electronics: Arduino and ham radio. Let’s discover the book, Arduino for Radio Amateur Applications (Elektor 2024), written by Glenn Popiel (KW5GP), and learn how to transform our ham projects with innovative Arduino-based solutions! Popiel, a network engineer and technology consultant, is also the author behind the “Arduino for Ham Radio” series, “High-Speed Multimedia for Amateur Radio,” along with many magazine articles and product reviews.

Arduino + Radio = Fun

Though primarily focused on the Arduino Nano, the projects outlined in this publication are fully compatible with the Arduino Uno. The book kicks off with a chapter on the Arduino microcontroller, and then investigates useful Arduino boards, modules, and shields, especially for ham radio applications, along with guidance on writing programs (Arduino sketches), project ideas, and troubleshooting approaches.

Beyond the basics, this book lays out the design, build, programming, and operation of ten specific projects. These range from a CW Beacon and Fox Hunt keyer, a mini weather station, and an RF probe with an LED bar graph, to both DTMF tone encoder and decoder, a multifunctional waveform generator, an automatic power on/off switch, a Bluetooth CW keyer, a station power monitor, and an AC current monitor. “Arduino for Radio Amateur Applications” also covers discussions on tools, building methods, and troubleshooting tips. Furthermore, the software needed for these projects, detailed within the pages, is available for download. This ensures you're equipped with all the necessary resources to bring these innovative Arduino applications to life.
