Develop cloud applications in the cloud
Not so long after releasing mbed OS 3 and after merging it with mbed OS 2, ARM and its mbed team have created mbed OS 5. Since 2 plus 3 equals 5, v4 has been skipped. The new release allows the mbed OS to be used in many more Internet of Things (IoT) applications. It also unlocks compatibility with the “classic” mbed OS 2, giving existing mbed users easy access to the new OS.

Review: “Visible Things” IoT jumpstarter kit from Avnet Silica
Like everyone else in the IoT arena, Avnet-Silica (Av-Si hereafter) have a get-u-going starter kit, and it was launched At Embedded World 2016. I received the Bluetooth Smart Connectivity version (# VT-SK-001-A101), the other versions are for LoRaWAN and SIGFOX. All three kits have the same purpose: smartphone in hand, read out a bunch of sensors located anywhere in the world. And press some buttons if an interesting or alarming situation is noticed.

Out of the vaporware: first quantum computer online
Although we have to wait a while for Walmart to stock quantum computers, a taste of ‘qubit’ computing power is available, courtesy IBM. A five qubit machine on a single cryogenic chip installed at the TJ Watson Research Center in New York, recently went online and is open for scientists to use, at the discretion of IBM, of course. Essentially a cloud-enabled platform, IBM Quantum Experience will allow users to run algorithms and experiments, work with the individual quantum bits, and explore tutorials and simulations around what might be possible with quantum computing.

The Cloud... from Bosch
Cloud-Services are an essential component of the Internet of Things concept. Web-based data banks can for example collect measurements made by sensors in the field. In the Cloud the information can be processed and then displayed on a web site (configurable by the user) to give a more meaningful representation of the data...

SoC for IoT’ed wearables lasts 30 days on 300 mAh
The low-cost I3 Series SoC announced by Ineda Systems Inc achieves a minuscule 29 µA/MHz power consumption in active mode. The target applications for I3 Series are fitness bands, smart sensors, thermostat and medical applications where low power is a key requirement. Using its ultra low power always-on sensing functionality, the new SoC achieves more than 30 days of battery-life on a 300-mAH battery.

My Journey into the Cloud (1)
Perhaps you’ve noticed, like me, that it’s almost impossible these days to avoid the ‘Internet of Things’. Amid the tsunami of information it’s sometimes difficult to get an overview of the technology. In this case it’s partly due to the nature of the beast; it’s not so easy to grasp...
