Conclusion

I was slightly apprehensive about Würth Elektronik exploiting Red Expert as a mere promotion tool for their component sales (sure, through distributors) but in all honesty, the program does not look or feel as pushing to buy, and even the component selection charts have enough technical detail to qualify as educational.

Even if you hate the old R, L and C, Würth Elektronik’s Red Expert may help you to become keenly aware of the absolutely essential functionality of these components in modern electronics designed to optimize electrical power transfer in all of its different guises from SMPU to wireless. The latter was shown convincingly in the Elektor Magazine article “Wireless Power Converter“ and the associated DIY kit. And before we forget, Red Expert may also get you a job, designers of power electronics and those with hands-on experience in power converter devices being in high demand these days.

To call Red Expert a free “tool” fails to do justice to the product. It is in fact a true gateway to power electronics design and technology, with remarkable ease of use, excellent didactics and a low threshold for beginners. Highly recommended.
